The Low Level Waste Repository (LLWR) is the UK’s national low level waste (LLW) disposal facility and located on the West Cumbrian coast approximately 7km south east of Sellafield. It has operated safely as the principal national disposal facility for low-level radioactive wastes since 1959. The waste is disposed of in engineered concrete vaults and where possible the waste is compacted, containerised and grouted before placement in the vault.
