L33201-Skip Retrievals - PIN Notice Skip Retrievals & Size Reduction

The rft has ended, you cannot answer the invitation.

This is the PIN notice for Pre Market engagement regarding Chapelcross Skip retrievals and size reduction project. The Chapelcross Ponds facility was used during the Reactor operating period, predominantly for the cooling and storage of irradiated fuel, prior to its transfer to the Sellafield Site for reprocessing. The Ponds are constructed as a single, above ground structure, essentially a rectangular steel reinforced concrete tank divided down its length by a reinforced concrete wall into two separate Ponds, designated Pond 1 and Pond 2. Each Pond has a capacity of approximately 1,800m3 of water at a depth of 6m. Pond 1 was drained and cleared of all its contents in July 2011. Pond 2 remains full of water with an inventory of redundant radioactive material including 87 empty fuel Skips (open steel crates approximately 1m3 in size), and a number of items of IN Pond (underwater) Furniture, some of which are stand alone and some are fixed to the Pond walls and floor e.g. floor rails, underwater lights and various metal brackets. The Pond floor is coated with a layer of sludge. The sludge and most of the metallic inventory is classed as intermediate level waste from a radiological perspective. Following successful diving campaigns of similar work at other Magnox Sites it is proposed to deploy divers to size reduce the metallic inventory, using mainly Plasma cutting techniques, prior to retrieval of all wastes for final disposal. This scope of work requires qualified divers, who have previous nuclear experience in this type of works.
